TODAY NEWS - BCCI Denies Shreyas Iyer ODI Captaincy Rumors, Addresses Asia Cup 2025 Squad Controversy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly dismissed speculations circulating on social media and news outlets about Shreyas Iyer being considered as the next ODI captain to succeed Rohit Sharma. The rumors gained traction following Iyer’s exclusion from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, despite his impressive performances in the Champions Trophy 2025, where he scored 243 runs at an average of 48.60, and in the IPL 2025, where he amassed 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the speculation, stating, “There have been no discussions regarding a change in ODI captaincy. Rohit Sharma remains our leader, and such reports are baseless.”
The decision to leave Iyer out of the Asia Cup squad, announced earlier this week, has sparked significant debate. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained, “Selecting a squad of 15 is always challenging, and Shreyas is a phenomenal talent. It’s not about his form but about team balance.” Iyer’s father expressed his frustration, saying, “I don’t know what more he needs to do to prove himself.” Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane also weighed in, calling the omission “surprising” given Iyer’s consistent form in white-ball cricket. The controversy has fueled discussions among fans and analysts, with many questioning the BCCI’s selection strategy ahead of the tournament starting September 9, 2025, in the UAE.
